Design that settles in, rather than shouts
Every Monolith and Heart rug starts as a sketch and a palette, long before it reaches a loom. Our design approach draws on natural, earthy tones and honest, tactile textures — pieces made to settle into a room and anchor it, rather than compete with everything around them. We'd rather design ten rugs that get better with age than a hundred that photograph well once and date within a year.
From idea to loom
A new design usually starts with a material or a technique we want to explore — a particular weave structure, a reclaimed yarn, a dye we haven't used before — and the colour story is built around it. We sketch, mock up a palette against real fibre samples (screens lie about colour, fibre doesn't), then commission a first sample from our weaving partners. That sample gets checked for colour accuracy, pile density and how the piece actually feels underfoot before a design is approved and added to the collection. Several rounds of adjustment are normal; we'd rather a design take longer than ship something we're not proud of.
We design for real homes
That means warm neutrals alongside the occasional considered colour statement; hard-wearing natural and reclaimed fibres that hold up to daily life; and sizes and shapes chosen around how people actually live, not just how a room photographs. A rug has to work under a coffee table, survive a spilled glass of wine, and still look right in five years — that's the brief behind every collection we release.
