The hands behind every rug
Our rugs are hand-knotted and handwoven by skilled artisans working in and around Delhi, India — many of whom have spent years, often a lifetime, learning their craft from parents and grandparents before them. Every knot is tied by hand, which is why no two Monolith and Heart rugs are ever exactly alike, and why a rug from us always carries a small trace of the person who made it.
A trade with many specialities
Rug-making isn't one skill, it's dozens. Some of our weaving partners specialise in dense hand-knotting, others in flat weaves and kelim work, others in dyeing, or in the finishing work of washing, stretching and trimming a piece to its final form. A single large rug often passes through several different pairs of expert hands before it's finished — each one responsible for a part of the piece they've spent years getting right.
Direct partnerships, not anonymous supply chains
We work directly with our weaving partners rather than through layers of subcontracting we can't see into, and we pay fairly for the time, skill and patience each rug demands. A large hand-knotted piece can take several weavers many weeks to complete — time we build into every made-to-order timeline, because there's no shortcut to work this good, and we're not interested in finding one.
A living tradition
Hand-weaving in India is a craft passed down through generations, often within the same families and villages, each with their own specialities passed on the way a language is — by watching, by doing, by correction and repetition until it's second nature. Buying a handmade rug means supporting the artisans who keep that tradition alive, and giving a centuries-old skill a reason to be taught to the next generation instead of quietly disappearing.
